BOUFFON
Prior Training
Before attending The Commedia School Candace had no formal training around Bouffon.
The Commedia School
The Bouffon unit lasts a total of six weeks and is the second main style introduced in the second year of training. The school is inspired by Lecoq's approach to Bouffon, although some aspect of Neo-Bouffon are hinted towards. Like many of the units in the school, the style is not defined from the beginning but rather discovered by the group as they undergo a series of exercises and improvisations which give glimpses of what the style is. The mystery, the grotesque, and the fantastic were focus points while learning Bouffon. Our humps and bumps were discovered by us with guidance from the founder of the school, Ole Brekke, who has studied and watched our class throughout the past two years. Ole Brekke has a wonderful eye for the natural imbalances and insecurities we carry, and was exceptional at bringing that gift to us in the Bouffon unit.
As a part of the study we got the opportunity to present our final show of Bouffon at a local Church in Amager. This was an incredible experience, to have the history of a church alongside the power of a group of Bouffons. Above I have included a video excerpt from our show, filmed by Jakob S. Bo.
Our show focused around one main topic that seems to float in our society now a days:
Someone. Should. Do. Something.
The current state of the world seems more catastrophic than ever. War, the refugee crisis, immigration politics, technology, school shootings, mass shootings, rape, white privilege, male privilege, white male privilege. It's difficult to not become apathetic, but so many of us do. In the chamber of apathy we hear the echo'd chant, that someone should do something. But who? We criticize the statement, pointing out that yes, someone should do something, but it is okay that that someone is not you, since you were busy anyways.
